Photoshoot inspiration

This image inspired the photo-shoot for my magazine. I wanted to recreate something like this but wanted a more of an hip hop feel to it so I made my model wear a hoodie like the girl in this picture. However I did not like her facial expression because she is not looking at the camera and magazine models usually do so that it seems they are looking directly at the person who is potentially going to buy it. For the double page spread I made my model also wear the hood up to look more fierce and edgy.

Contents Page Reaserch

This contents page has a lot of information and the writing is quite small so that everything could fit and no space is wasted. The main colours are red, black and grey. These colours are more likely to appeal to a male audience. The fonts are easy to read yet they all look the same and blend together. This is something I’d rather avoid because it makes everything clump together and looks boring.

I would like my contents page to look more like this one that the Q contents page because it suits my target audience. It has feminine colours and would attract teenage girls. It has smaller subheadings that break up different parts of the magazine; this is something I would like to do as it is effective and quite a useful feature to use.

Double Page Spread Analysis 1

How Magazines make money?

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow came up with an idea that people are motivated to achieve certain needs. When one need is fulfilled a person seeks to fulfil the next one, and so on.
The earliest and most widespread version of Maslow's (1943, 1954) hierarchy of needs includes five motivational needs, often depicted as hierarchical levels within a pyramid.

                                                    How do magazines make money?

Circulations and Subscriptions
-       When we go to the news-stand and buy magazines of our choice, the profit from that sale makes money for the magazine. However, there is very little profit from this, once you factor in the price it costs to make the magazine, the cost to transport it to the news-stand and the commission the magazine company must pay the news-stand company for providing space to sell its magazine. Magazines make far more money from subscriptions since they cut out at least one of the intermediaries and get their product directly to the consumer. Magazine companies also have your address so they can make a pitch to renew your magazine subscription when it comes due, as well as pitch any other magazines they may produce that they think could be of interest to you.
        Advertising
-     Magazines are full of ads. The single best way that a magazine makes money is by allowing advertisers to use its unused space throughout the magazine, including the covers and inside front and back cover. Not only does the magazine make money with this form of advertising, it also fills up the pages by placing ads in space on pages around the story lines. The magazine looks better and its revenue increases.

GLAMOUR Analysis

This magazine is targeted at working to middle class women aged 21-35.

The cover model looks right at the reader which makes the magazine more attractive and inviting to buy.

The bright pink is significant to women as it automatically draws them to it, since pink is stereotypically a feminine colour. The colour of the model's make up allows her to stand out against the grey background.

The cover lines and the masthead all link the same colour schemes. The masthead is in capital letters to stand out more.

The puff is an extra to give the reader another reason for why they should buy the magazine so that more are sold.

XXL Magazine Analysis

This magazine is based on Hip Hop music; A style of popular music of US black and Hispanic origin, featuring rap with an electronic backing. This magazine is targeted at male audience in the ages ranging from 17 to 25. The name of the magazine (XXL) is very short yet catchy which male magazine Masthead's tend to be, it also suggests this magazine is 'big' as in it's popular. The colour red used connotes danger, passion, importance and action which automatically ties in with the short snappy title as well as the central image and the genre of the magazine. The model on the cover used (Lil Wayne) is from the rap music industry which shows the reader what genre this magazine is. The model used looks like a gangster because stereotypicaly the two are always put together but it also relate to the origins of this music genre. He is also looking intimidating and straight at the reader to draw them in. The tattoos could also suggest he was in prison or belonged to a gang. The cover lines tell what other rappers are featured inside and uses big names to show how exclusive this magazine is.
